Auteur critic Andrew Sarris from The Village Voice once again championed director Don Siegel by calling the picture, the best American movie I have seen so far in 1968. Widmarks character was resurrected (sans wife) in the rotating 1972 TV series NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie that included Banacek and Cool Million.
